Through the Veil: The Spirit of Halloween
I know, I know, we don’t technically celebrate Halloween here in Australia.
But honestly, I’ve always loved any excuse to dress up, whether it’s me or the house! There’s something about bringing a little fun and magic into the home that just lifts the energy.
Traditionally, Halloween traces back to Samhain (pronounced Sow-en), an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In Wales, a similar festival called Calan Gaeaf was celebrated around the same time. Both honoured the turning of the seasons and the belief that during this period, the veil between worlds was at its thinnest; when loved ones in spirit could draw near.
Of course, here in Australia, we’re welcoming spring, not winter, which can make it all feel a little upside down! But I like to see this time as a meeting point between rebirth and remembrance. While the Northern Hemisphere reflects on endings, we’re celebrating new beginnings. The two energies blend beautifully, reminding us that life, death, and spirit are part of the same eternal cycle.
For me, Halloween is a celebration of connection between people, worlds, and energy itself. It’s that one time of year when the mystical becomes a little more mainstream, and the unseen world gently brushes against ours. Many still see spiritual connection as something “out there” or unusual, but the truth is, everyone has the ability to sense energy and spirit. It’s part of our soul’s design. Some people simply haven’t tuned into it yet. Just like singing, it’s something we can all do, but it becomes truly powerful with awareness, practice, and the right intention.
Now, I know some people will feel tempted to have a little divination fun around Halloween. Perhaps pulling a few cards, using a pendulum, or even trying to connect with spirit themselves. Some may even be brave and try a spirit board. Now I don’t want to be the pooper of parties, but please remember, contacting spirit isn’t a game. It’s a sacred experience that must always be done with respect, sincerity, and clear intention. Spirit communication should never be taken lightly or done in jest. Before any connection, take time to set an intention of love and light, and ensure your energy is well protected.
If you’re curious about how to set intentions or put energetic protections in place, I’ve written other blogs that explore these topics in more detail. And if you ever feel called to connect, I strongly recommend doing so with a trusted, ethical practitioner who has experience working with spirit. Someone who understands how to create a safe and loving space for those connections to unfold.
So, whether you believe in ghosts or not, I hope you find a little magic in the air this Halloween. Decorate, dress up, or simply enjoy the light-hearted fun that fills the streets and homes. Even in the brightness of spring, there’s something truly special about pausing to honour those who came before us, and remembering that love always finds its way through the veil.
Love & Light
